New computer needed - well not quite - but still not happy

Why can't I transfer my files to windows!

I used to run Windows in a virtual machine (Parallels) on my Mac and had no problems moving files between the Mac side of things and the Windows VM.

In addition, a lot of apps are available for both platforms, with a common file format. And all image formats are usually readable on all platforms.

What files are you talking about?

Seconded. Why can't I transfer my files to windows! Pain in the neck.
If I want to transfer files between Mac and PC I use an external drive formatted to exFAT, just make sure you eject the drive before removing....

Affinity photo and publisher files in the main. I have both programs installed on my windows and MAC machines but use my iMAC for editing. The laptop is windows and easier to take into the field or on holiday so sometimes it would help if I had some files from the iMAC. The other way around is not a problem: iMAC reads from external FAT formatted disks but won't write to them. Looks like I need to investigate exFAT but it is annoying how Apple puts obstacles in the way, as Toby has said.

I am not an expert, I think its just different formats, my understanding is that exFAT is cross platform with no 4gb file size limit and it works transferring files between my Mac M1pro and my old Dell T5500 workstation.

I know that you can do it, but my initial point was in support of Toby's remark. MACs will read a FAT formatted disk, which means Apple included FAT support, but deliberately disabled writing to the same format simply to make MS compatibility awkward. I find that annoying but typical of big corporation arrogance.

Sorry, having a moment :( . I appreciate your (and Joanna's) helpful suggestions.

As I said I am not an expert but I have no problems.
FAT16/32 and exFAT should read and write on MAC OS.
I assume you have formatted the external drive to FAT32 and not NTFS by mistake?
My understanding is that NTFS is a closed format owned by Microsoft and although MAC OS can read it, it has not been licensed to write to it.
There are 3rd party drivers for NTFS but I have no experience with them.

Ah, might be me. Will check. Thanks.

I was having a clear-out today and I found my CS6 disc from way back when, in the original plastic CD case I think I was still using it when I was using Windows7. Now there's a blast from the past!
I have CS6 but it won't install on my mac or on my Win 11 machine now, although it is running quite happily on my win 10 machine. I had a loong chat with Adobe and they told me that it is windows 11 fault because of the older technology of CS6 (even though it installs but I cannot register it..) mutter mutter.

My desktop has now been disconnected from the internet for 3 day and PS is still working as normal with all normal functions......

Thought you might like to know I have started using exFAT successfully. I get around to things eventually. Many thanks.

That's good news, I am glad you have got it working, thanks for letting me know. :)

I've actually got the Affinity package, Glenn, I bought it for Publisher, but I've never used Photo as its on the PC on which I've still got CS6. I have the subscription version of PS on my work PC, I find it a complete bore, power hungry far beyond the capacity of the machine, and constantly nagging you to update to the latest version. The interface is irritating too, it seems overcomplex compared with CS6.
I bought affinityphoto and found it gave weird colours with my Canon 5DsR and I too found the interface annoying

@Digital Finger Nice to see you back Simon. As regards affinity, I still use it regularly and it has improved significantly especially in regards stability and some odd behaviours in layer ordering. If it's not for you that's fine but with the price of PS going up it is at least worthy of a freebee trial for those concerned about such things.

@John King I'd be interested to hear if your experiment continues to work..

I assume you mean running PS when not connected to the internet - well yes it is. The programme is on my Desk top computer but as I also use my laptop downstairs I have never tried.

Update

I have just checked and yes it also works on my laptop when the modem signal is turned off.

Good to hear. Thanks John.
