Converting Colour To Black And White

I would much prefer to own a piece of hand made furniture than to buy an IKEA flatpack, because whilst they are functional where is the skill in assembling a ready made kit (Apart from deciphering the instructional drawings) they always look what they are - inexpensive and factory made. Wielding a screwdriver or an Allen Key can hardly be classed as a skill.

I agree. But I can't see how this actually relates to photography.....

It doesn't, but sometimes you have to go 'off piste' to create an analogy to illustrate a comparison and personal feelings between the two points of view .

Anyone who is trying to make meaningful black and white photographs has to deal with complex thought and decision-making processes. This applies wether you are using a film camera and an enlarger, or a digital camera and a computer. The camera, enlarger, computer with its programmes and printer are all just tools. They don't work on their own. They are there to help you create the kind of photographs that you have in your mind. In this sense, in terms of the effort needed to produce something meaningful, there is no difference between digital and film.
