Two pears

(I thought that there had been several 'two pear' shots on the forum but can only find Steven's - Poire Noir | Black and White Photography Learning Forum (digitalmonochromeforum.co.uk) )

Anyway .... been experimenting with a different way of shooting still life - light at right angle to camera and adding a texture using blend modes.

This is my best effort so far - still not quite where I want to get to (but then not very sure where that is :) )

A classic subject Chris, love the square format. Well done.

Thanks Simon and Alan.

The set up I outlined is pretty accurate, and sounds formulaic, but in practice:

  • I took about 30 shots, with slightly different positions for the light or pears
  • Tried processing two other images and scrapped them before settling on this one
Overall, this is a simple set up = subject flat on a surface and someone else's texture.

More complicated is an upright subject with your own texture/background.

So ...still some way to go technically as well getting something I really like. :)

Nice concept, Chris. I've never seen pears shapes like that before. You may also try and experiment with low key light, punch up the highlights and lower the shadows to give it a "film noir" effect.

Thanks Steven.

I had been intending to use bananas - title = yingana and yangana. But we only had pears so I used them.

By 'low key light' do you mean the same light source but dimmer?

Thanks Tommy - only just seen your comment.

My first two attempts were single pears, but couldn't get either to work.:(

Love the way you have set these up, Chris, the main negative I have about is the background looks shaper than the Pears

Thanks Martin.

I'll consider the sharpness. As it is s separate layer I can easily amend it.

Is that because now we are outside the EU we can get our misshapen fruit and vegetables back ;-)

Yes, can't wait to go down to the supermarket tomorrow and get a load of bent cucumbers, bananas and runner beans.

More seriously .... When I wanted to do my homage to Edward Weston I had to buy a pepper when on holiday in Italy. Even the 'misshapen/ugly' veg sold here doesn't live up to its billing.

I think these pears slipped through.
